Sewage Odor Investigation

In response to the concerns about the sewer odor in some parts of town, the NJDEP and Passaic County Board of Health have responded to the Authority as we try to determine the causes. Their reports with the findings are provided below.

We are aware of the Hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs) odors that have been popping up throughout the Borough and are working to narrow down a cause for the recent occurrences. We believe that the sewer smell may be generated by the sewer collection system, especially with the water table being as low as it has been. To try and improve the situation, the Authority has scheduled sewer main cleaning in the affected areas during November and December. We will continue to monitor the situation and clean the mains as necessary. At this time, we have no reason to believe that the odor is being generated by an upset at the treatment plant, located at 2000 Lincoln Ave, Pompton Lakes. Please reach out to the main office if you have any questions or concerns (973-839-3044).

If you are smelling a sewer / rotten egg odor inside your home, but not really outside, there are several common household reasons to consider that may cause that odor to infiltrate through your home. Please see below:
